New degree program in Asian Studies and International Trade

University College is proud to offer a new Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree program in Asian Studies and International Trade. The program was developed by representatives from University College, the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The courses required for this major include economics, foreign language, historical and philosophical perspectives from Asian countries, and either marketing or management. Students can choose to complete Chinese or Japanese courses as the foreign language requirement.

Graduation … finally!

Did you know that University College had 162 graduates who earned Bachelor’s degrees in December 2007? Is it time for you to join our growing legion of alumni?

Here’s how you should prepare for graduation … First, review your degree evaluation in Spectrum to make sure that everything is correct. Second, set up an appointment with your advisor to make sure that you have time to complete all of your requirements before graduation. Third, file an intent to graduate online at www.uc.memphis.edu/graduation-information.php at least one semester prior to graduation. For example, if you plan to graduate in the spring semester, you must file your intent to graduate in the preceding fall semester.  If you plan to graduate in the fall semester, you must file your intent to graduate in the preceding summer semester.

It is very simple to file your intent to graduate – simply fill in the blanks in the online form and click on the submit button at the bottom when you are finished. After approximately six weeks, you will receive a graduation packet from our graduation analyst via UM email. Be sure to complete the forms as indicated and return them to the University College office. Also be sure to check the commencement website at saweb.memphis.edu/commencement  for details about the commencement ceremony if you are going to attend.

Thinking of changing your major to University College?

The University College is one of seven degree-granting colleges on the University of Memphis campus. We are generally known as the interdisciplinary college meaning that our degree programs combine coursework from two or more academic areas. We offer two bachelor’s degrees: the Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.) and Bachelor of Liberal Studies (B.L.S.). Within those two degrees, we offer over 20 different degree concentrations, as well as three online degree programs through the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP). In addition, we offer the opportunity to design an individualized degree program.

Should I take an apple to my advisor?

No, you don’t need to take an apple to your advisor. :) However, there are some things that you can do to be prepared for your advising appointment. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. If you are a new student to University College, review the degree programs on our website at www.uc.memphis.edu. Carefully consider the degree programs and make a list of the ones that interest you.
  2. If you already have a declared major in University College, review your degree evaluation in Spectrum to see the list of your completed and remaining degree requirements.
  3. Review the class schedule on Spectrum for the upcoming semester. Make a list of possible classes that you are interested in taking.
  4. Bring a list of questions that you need to discuss with your advisor.
  5. Plan for extra time for parking and getting to the office in plenty of time for your appointment. Appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes; you will have to re-schedule your appointment if you are late.

The advisor will prepare for your appointment by reviewing your academic transcript,  degree program evaluation and grade point averages. At the end of the appointment, you will leave with an updated copy of your advising degree sheets, a semester plan form with potential classes for the upcoming semester(s) and a checklist of the next steps that you need to take.

The advisors in University College have over 35 years of experience at The University of Memphis. We value the opportunity that we have to work with students on a daily basis as they progress to graduation. Please remember that we do our very best, but we are human and capable of making mistakes. This is your degree and you should always verify your remaining degree requirements especially the closer that you get to graduation.

Welcome!

Welcome to the advising blog for University College students at The University of Memphis! We hope to share up-to-date information about our college, our wonderful students and our interdisciplinary degree programs. To view information about University College and the degree programs that are available, visit our website at www.uc.memphis.edu.

Currently, there are over 1,300 undergraduate students in University College who are advised by three professional advisors and five faculty advisors. All students must have an initial advising appointment in our office in 218 Brister Hall; phone appointments are available for our online students and students at distance sites like Jackson and Dyersburg. Students are assigned to advisors by their last name as follows:

  • Advisor Sara Williams works with students with last names of A through G.
  • Advisor Dot Hale works with students with last names of H through O.
  • Advisor Tracy Robinson works with students with last names of P through Z.

Students in the Family and Consumer Studies unit (majors in Fashion Merchandising, Home Furnishings Merchandising and Family and Consumer Studies) are advised by faculty advisors after the initial meeting with an advisor in the University College office.

 The University of Memphis requires that students consult with their advisor before each registration period, so our advisors schedule advising appointments all year long (yes, even in the summer and over holiday breaks). Students should meet with their advisor in late September to discuss spring classes and in early March to discuss summer and fall classes.
